I live in Mexico and have been curious about the encounter of Spanish and Indigenous cultures. Within a few decades after the conquest bilingual scribes, educated in both cultures, collected important surviving Nahuatl poetry and song. This piece is included in the Cantares Mexicanas. The translation is by John Bierhorst from the 1985 edition of Cantares.
Precious emerald, my heart here on earth.
The emerald sunrise here on earth, the flower on earth.
In the flowery place of flowers, in the new water
In the hall of stones, I see the mountains
I see myself in the mirror.
