From the Shadows, Bring Light

“From the Shadows, Bring Light” signals for me the rebirth that takes place after the darkness, whether seasonally – as in the transition from winter to spring - or in one’s soul. I lived for many years in the New England region of the United States, and a rebirth occurred when spring arrived – spirits soared and everyone was outdoors, breathing in the warmer air and the fresh scent of blossoming flowers. After I moved to the warm, sub-tropical climate of South Florida, there was no such annual celebration in April or May, but every November we were giddy about the end of hot, humid weather and the onset of dryer, cooler air surrounding us! The spiritual transition from the darkness to light was inspired by the St. Francis prayer. One of the lines in the prayer says, “that where there are shadows, I may bring light.” After losing my only child, I was in the ‘shadows’ of grief, trying to find faith. The prayer inspires me every day to look to the light – and bring the light - despite the darkness. The piece features a ramp, at the top of which is light, but there are barriers and obstacles, representing those impediments people face along the way to the light.
