Statement: My latest work explores my memories and the memories of others’; they don't always align with mine so where does truth lie? I have used old photographs from that box we all have, somewhere on a dusty shelf. Many are of people no one, except myself, can now recognise and there are some even I can’t name although I know they were part of my life or the life of my parents. Other 'memories included have imposed themselves on me, e.g. French papers found in an old Sucre tin and some tiny images discovered in a vintage camera. Whose memories are those? Are they now mine in some way? Do I have the right to use them? I work mainly in acrylic; but some elements are deliberately made with watercolour markers. These areas/words will fade with time, as our memories do. The repeated Italian phrase is another memory, used in student work over 50 years ago and now a recurring motif. Other notations are taken from the reverse of the photographs used including reference numbers, shopping list and comments from a WW2 censor. Memories are like shadows - not reality, existing in a faraway country and, differently, in the memories of others.
Bio: I live in Newmillerdam, near Wakefield, UK with my wife, Jan (AKA WWS), and four cats. Studied Fine Art to degree level and later went on to teach art and design in comprehensive schools. I moved into higher education at Bretton Hall College, Wakefield and held various posts, including leading a PGCE art and design courses and as overall head of Initial Teacher Training at the University of Leeds. I took early retirement in 2001 and worked for many years as a freelance consultant in educational leadership before returning to my art roots, leading several highly successful art projects for local authorities and acting as an assessor for the Arts Council’s flagship Arts Award programme. I returned to painting in 2018 after surviving art college in the 1960s. Didn't paint seriously for 45 years. Since re-discovering painting, I have been amazed by the way my work has been received. Works hang in collections in the UK and I’m preparing for a second joint show in 2022. Recently awarded a prize from a New York based gallery and this August several pieces will be in an exhibition, in the OXO Tower in London.
