Leonid Slutsker – "Photographic Sketches" / Personal Online Exhibition (June 22 – July 3 2026)

 

On June 22, 2026, the personal exhibition Photographic Sketches by photographer and visual artist Leonid Slutsker opens online, presenting a body of work that blurs the boundaries between photography, painting, and abstraction. More than a traditional photographic exhibition, the project invites viewers into a world of fleeting impressions, atmospheric transformations, and visual poetry. 

Born in 1936 in Saint Petersburg (Leningrad at the time), Russia, Slutsker followed an unusual path toward artistic expression. Trained as a mechanical engineer and later earning a Ph.D. in physics and mechanics of polymers, he built a successful scientific career before emigrating to the United States in 1978. As the author of more than forty scientific publications and seven American patents, his analytical background contrasts intriguingly with the intuitive and emotional nature of his photographic practice. 

Yet photography has remained a constant creative pursuit throughout his life. Long before the digital era transformed the medium, Slutsker was already exploring the camera as a tool not merely for recording reality, but for interpreting it. Inspired by painting and sculpture, he gradually developed a visual language rooted in photo-impressionism and abstraction. 

Capturing Impressions Rather Than Facts

At the heart of Slutsker's work lies a fascination with atmosphere. He is drawn to moments when reality becomes uncertain: the fading light after sunset, reflections in rain-soaked streets, dense fog, snowfall, or the mysterious glow of the night. Rather than documenting a scene objectively, he seeks to capture its emotional resonance—the sensation of being there rather than a precise description of what was seen. 

This approach places him within a tradition that echoes the spirit of Impressionist painting. Just as painters sought to depict the changing effects of light and mood, Slutsker uses photography to preserve visual impressions before they disappear. His images often feel suspended between memory and observation, inviting viewers to complete the narrative themselves. 

Experimental Photography as Visual Transformation

A defining aspect of Slutsker's artistic practice is his experimental use of digital manipulation. Working with a Sony RX10 IV camera and Photoshop Elements, he treats post-processing not as a corrective tool but as an integral part of the creative process. 

In his exhibition statement, he compares digital editing to the way painters repeatedly rework a canvas. Layers, textures, distortions, and subtle transformations become visual brushstrokes. Through this process, photographs evolve into hybrid images—works that occupy a territory somewhere between photography, painting, and graphic art. 

Many of his abstract compositions challenge viewers to abandon literal interpretation. Forms dissolve, familiar objects become unrecognizable, and color and texture take on primary importance. In these images, meaning emerges through emotion rather than identification. The viewer is encouraged to engage with the work intuitively, allowing personal associations to shape the experience.

The Poetry of Ambiguity

For Slutsker, abstraction is not an escape from reality but a deeper exploration of perception. He believes that when recognizable subjects disappear, the imagination becomes more active. The resulting images create a space where mystery, memory, and emotion coexist.

This openness is one of the most compelling qualities of his photography. A title may suggest one emotional reading, while a viewer discovers another entirely different interpretation. Rather than offering definitive answers, the works remain deliberately unresolved, encouraging contemplation and dialogue. 

A Lifetime of Observation

Today, Slutsker lives in New Jersey and continues to develop an extensive photographic archive. His work spans multiple thematic series, including Emotions, Silhouettes, Night Photographs, Reflections, Nature, People, Relationships, and In the Whirlwind of Life. He is also a member of the Princeton Photography Club and has exhibited his work through People & Paintings Gallery. 

The exhibition Photographic Sketches can be viewed as a culmination of decades spent observing the world through a lens that is equally scientific and poetic. Each image functions like a visual note—a sketch made not with pencil or paint, but with light, movement, atmosphere, and memory.

In an age saturated with photographs, Leonid Slutsker's work reminds us that photography can still be a place of wonder. His images do not simply show us the world; they encourage us to see beyond it.
