Short Art Story | "Inner World"

 

We like to believe that we see the world as it is. But perhaps we only ever see the world from where we stand.

We may become educated, thoughtful, open-minded. We may learn to listen, to understand, to accept differences. We may spend years trying to become more rational, more tolerant, more aware of the complexity of other people.

And still, somewhere inside, there is a closed room. A private world from which we observe everything outside.

We interpret people through our experiences. We judge their choices through our own values. We recognize kindness according to what kindness means to us, and we condemn cruelty according to the boundaries we have drawn between right and wrong.

Even when we try to understand another person, we do so from inside ourselves. Perhaps every human being is, in a sense, an island. Or a sealed box — carrying an entire universe within, filled with memories, fears, desires, convictions, contradictions and things that have never been said aloud.

Inside that world, everything has a meaning. The same gesture can be generous to one person and intrusive to another. Silence can mean peace, indifference, fear or grief. What one person considers freedom, another may perceive as selfishness. What seems irrational from the outside may make perfect sense within someone else's inner world.

And so we move among one another, convinced that we understand. But we never have the whole picture. We can open the doors of our inner worlds. We can listen, question, learn and try to see beyond our own filters. Yet some distance will always remain between one mind and another. Perhaps this is not a failure of understanding, but one of the fundamental conditions of being human.

Each of us carries a world that no one else can enter completely. And perhaps Inner World is a quiet reminder of that invisible architecture — the walls that protect us, the walls that limit us, and the strange universe that exists behind them.     (by Cosmina Marcela Oltean)
