Sulamith

About this artwork

A painting in acrylics on linen. This painting was made in response to the increase of domestic violence during the pandemic. And if I see the verbal harassment during virtual life drawing sessions, I can only wonder in which century we are living in. So, this is dedicated to all women having to endure harassment and violence in their life. The title “Sulamith” also refers to a poem by Paul Celan and evokes another question about the possibility of art making in dark times. But to answer with a quote by Singer-Songwriter Philip David Ochs: “In such ugly times, the only true protest is beauty”.
