About this artwork

It is inevitable that childhood dreams remain anchored in memory. Sometimes not so clear as to faithfully reproduce what happened, but they do evoke memories that continue to move us over the years. That seed remains sown in our feelings forever. Sometimes those dreams are the result of a sad reality. Sometimes we need to feel we are somewhere else, to imagine a new destination where we can live a normal life. Reality traps us and hits us and dreams are the only way out. When a conflict or a war displaces your family, when you have seen your parents and siblings cry without consolation, the body shudders. However, out of weakness comes the need to get going, not to abandon oneself and to look for any place where one can regain the right to live in peace. It is the fight for yourself, for your children and for those to come. El Sueño addresses all those emotions latent in the thoughts of the protagonist, a refugee girl. It expresses the determined desire to move from the place that is dehumanizing you. She plays with a little paper boat on calm waters today, turbulent tomorrow. And her innocence hurts because she does not know the drama told by the hull and the sails. They are stories of tragic outcome, also stories with a happy ending, but all of them are based on a painful story. Newsprint tells the life trajectory of Sarah and Yusra Mardini, an incredible and heartbreaking adventure that these Syrian girls undertook in 2015 to flee the horror. Fortunately they live to tell the tale, to shout it out. The Dream is an introspective; the naked, harsh and true experience of tens of thousands of humans for whom only one path to happiness is open to them. Someday, that ill-fated little boat could be transformed into the cayuco at the bottom, with her inside and without a rudder, to be the vehicle of her last voyage or her salvation, all under a sky full of doubts and uneasiness. Dreams become the only way to survive reality.
