About this artwork

Learning To Fly, in short, is a narrative piece that tells the story of an individuals' desire and journey to awaken. Drawing inspiration from Tibetan tapestries and religious altarpieces of many denominations, it chronicles the various stages we may all find ourselves in at any given time. Each character can represent a theme or state of being, whether it is the "sleeper" still shrouded in sleep and dreams, the "meditator" journeying inwards on a quest of self discovery, or the "awakened one" finding him/herself in an entirely new world of light. It invites the viewer to reflect on his/her own journey within themselves and to experience him/herself in these various stages. In this way Awareness enters as a strong focus of the piece.
